Welsh Snooker Presentation 2008/09

Whitez Snooker Club / 23rd August 2009

The first presentation night held by the W.B.S.A. went well despite several hiccups. President Darren Morgan opened the evening by welcoming everyone and went on to outline changes and innovations for the forthcoming season. He congratulated all players who had won trophies before handing over to John Dobson who called up the junior award winners. Top Welsh professional Ryan Day was guest of honour and presented the prizes.

Junior Winners

Under 14’s

Rhys Thomas was player of the year after reaching the final of all four ranking events. Under 14’s Welsh Champion was Callum Lloyd. Suraj Sing (still only 10) was most promising player.

Under 16’s

Jak Jones & Duane Jones dominated this age group. Duane won the Welsh Under 16’s. Championship and was named player of the year. Swansea's Tom Rees was most promising player. Jamie Clarke was another who performed well in this category.

Under 19’s

Again Duane & Jak were dominant. Duane added the Welsh Under 19’s Championship to his growing collection of titles and Jak was player of the year. Dale Hughes was named most promising player.

Under 21’s

Michael White was outstanding, winning 3 out of 4 events, including the Welsh Under 21’s Championship in this age group. Michael was player of the year with Jamie Tudor most promising player.

John Dobson congratulated all junior players who were selected for the international teams before Darren Morgan again took over to call up the senior trophy winners.

Senior Winners

Welsh Senior Champion - Michael White

Welsh Senior Runner-Up - Darren Morgan

Other good performances came from Gavin Pantall, Alan Morgan and Lee Walker among others.

Over 40's

Darren Morgan and Ron Jones were the dominant players with Philip Williams also putting in some fine performances.

We believe this first attempt at a presentation evening was a success. A tremendous amount of work goes on behind the scenes organising an event such as this. A special thank you goes to Ryan Day for presenting the prizes (after eventually turning up), Darren Morgan for organising the trophies.

John Terry, Darren Morgan, Bill Gourlay, Gordon Pantall, John Dobson for setting the room and trophies up. Elaine, Kath, Alison, Joyce for once again providing a tremendous buffet and last but not least thanks to Leighton and Sue for allowing us the use of the club.

Hopefully the presentation night will become a regularly feature at the end of each season. Unfortunately some prize winners were not able to make it, due to holidays and playing in other snooker events. With all the snooker being played these days it is extremely difficult to organise any event without clashing with something else. However we will endeavour to avoid these clashes whenever possible.

On a more sombre note -

The W.B.S.A. sincerely apologise to everyone for the inappropriate behaviour and language of the so called comedian. This idiot went a long way towards spoiling what was otherwise a very pleasant evening. Even after being asked to tone down his act because of the children and ladies present he continued to swear and verbally abuse Welsh treasurer John Terry. This was totally unacceptable. Once again we apologise, but rest assured, it will not happen again.

To close I believe everyone present enjoyed the evening but we are always open to suggestions which will improve our members enjoyment of all aspects of Welsh snooker. If you have any idea's please let us know.

Best of luck for the coming season,

See you on the circuit,

John Dobson
