Mens Event Four, Jack Carney Memorial - Qualifying results

Mens Event Four, the Jack Carney Memorial got underway with the qualifying rounds taking place on the 9th and 10th of January.

The Matchroom, Llanelli was the venue on the Saturday for the West Area Qualifier. Ben Jones against Ross Jones was the tightest match of the day. Ben was plagued by the white finding the pocket on several occasions, but fought hard to a 2-2 score line after potting the final black to win the match, the white again found the pocket, handing the match to Ross. Ross played a good hard fought all round game to hold International Ben, potting some nice balls and good safety play to earn his win 3-2. Rhydian Richards had an uneventful day only losing one frame in his first round match with Kristian Phelps who had a break of 51 to secure frame one, Rhydian settled in the second and went on to win the match 3-1. After that Rhydian wasn't pressed in his remaining matches winning both 3-0 to qualify to the finals. In the bottom half of the draw Andrew Pagett didn't lose a frame all day and qualified by winning his matches 3-0. Most improved player was Rhydian ap Owen by winning his first two matches 3-1 and 3-2 respectively against former Junior International Dale Hughes in the first, and Paul Thomas in the second knocking in breaks 87 and 63 for his win. In his qualifying match with Andrew Pagett he came up against the vastly more experienced Andrew Pagett and went out 3-0.

The North region saw some titanic battles and the return of a couple of old faces too. Alex Taubman, Jack Bradford and Matthew Roberts qualified for the finals. Alex only dropped one frame against Nathan Davenport and saw off the resurgent Leon Evans 3-0. Jack was pushed hard by both Rhys Williams (3-1) and Richard King (also 3-1, despite Richard injuring his back in his second frame against Lee Gorton). Matthew Roberts scraped through his first round match against Carl Hill, was in form against Mike Dorey and was almost beaten by Ross Jones, an unlucky positional shot off the last red/black costing Ross his chance. Good to see Sam Willaims and Gareth Edwards back after missing the opening rounds.

The East Area qualifying took place at Redx and making it through were David John, Jak Jones and Kishan Hirani. David found a rich vein of form, dropping just a single frame on the day and had to take on the ever improving Jackson Page. It can only be a matter of time before Jackson makes the finals. Jak didn't drop a frame and thoroughly deserved his qualifying place. Young guns Dylan Emery and Sam Thomas were both shot down by the experience of Mark Stoneman, but Kishan proved too much for Mark in the qualifying play off.
